I have the list and commentary on the Good Life’s restaurant page (suddenly, the most popular page on the entire site, and I had such high hopes for my Bowling page). Quick summary: (1) Melito’s (2) Joey’s Hotdogs (3) Table 9 (4) Ray’s Dog House (Dogs R Us) (5) The BoardWalkÂ

Glutton Opines: Carena’s- The ‘Rasta and the Redneck
Wow. I usually like to wait a couple months before trying a new restaurant, so that they can get their feet wet. But after last week’s call for reader feedback, people have been raving non-stop about the new Carena’s Jamaican Grille. I couldn’t resist, so I recently made a trek to “Old Midlothian.” When you have two of Richmond’s restaurant royalty combining forces (Carena Ives of Jamaica House and Jimmy Sneed), expectations are going to be really, really high. Jimmy Sneed’s Frog and the Redneck was THE IT restaurant for much of the 90’s in Richmond (if not the East coast). In its heyday, it was the type of mythical restaurant foodies from DC would drive two hours just to try. Then, poof, one day it just disappears. I’d love to get the scoop of what really happened with the rise and fall of the F&R (VH1 special or, at least, a Style magazine cover story). Â
Anyhow, my first impression of Carena’s is 100% positive. Everything from the homemade fruit punch (they even have the beloved ‘Ting soda) to the apps to the main dish to the celebrity clientele (I gawked at Happy’s car) was spot on. The menu itself will seem familiar (a lot of imports from Jamaica House). However, it looks like Sneed has inserted himself into the menu with items like a magnificent ciabatta hamburger (according to the menu, seared at 900 degrees) and pizza (seems strange for a Kingston-themed restaurant but worth a future try).  Their soup du jour may give Zuppa and Mekong a run for the money for best soup in town (as long as you tolerate dem bones).
Before anointing Carena’s a top 50 restaurant, I’ll need to try it a couple more times, but from this first impression, it’s well on its way there.
The irony here is that this single restaurant could very well have more impact on this beleaguered neighborhood than that crazy Cloverleaf Mall boondoggle happening across the street. Sorry, couldn’t resist that cheap shot.

Glutton Opines: Top 50 Restaurant Followup
As expected, anytime you publish this kind of list, you’ll get feedback. Added a couple new links to the page including a coupon section and more review sites (totally forgot about the haduken survey). In addition, there is a new section for reader feedback choices called Veto Override the Good Life’s Top 50.  I think it’s good to get the agora’s collective 2 cents. If you’d like to scold me for egregiously leaving a restaurant out, shoot me an email, and I’ll add that restaurant to the voting tally.  Remember, this list is designed to help navigate strangers around Richmond dining, so only include restaurants that you are totally passionate about.
Upcoming Questions of the Week:
- Who has the best pizza?
- Who has the best hotdog?
- Who has the best steak?
- Who has the best french fries?
- Who has the best bread basket?
- Who has the best dessert?

CBS 6 enters Richmond real estate market
WTVR 6 recently entered a crowded real estate market with their CBS6RealEstate.com (redirects to subpage within their main site). They are currently using Adicio as their engine, and seem to be hitting the MLS tables for their data. The site is fairly easy to use, and the load times are reasonable. It looks like Joyner Fine Properties has signed up as their primary, big banner advertiser. Makes you wonder whether 12, 8, or 35 will enter this game? Suffice it to say, the CBS6 site has been added to this directory…

Richmond, Best in Class: Urban Trails, Marathons, Multisports Events, etc
Just browsing through the recent Blue Ridge Outdoors issue (November 2007), feeling guilty I’m not out there today jogging the 5 miler (On the other hand, I will never, nor do I ever want to, run an entire marathon!)…Anyways, it’s their “Best of Southeast” issue, and they list their choice for Best Trails and Best Events.
Richmond shows up on a bunch of lists…
- #1 Best marathon: SunTrust Richmond Marathon How apropos.
- #1 Best urban trail system: James River Parks…True dat.
- #1 Best multisport event: Muddy Buddy; #3 Best multiport event: Xterra…Wow, two events in the top 5. We rule!
- #2 Best Endurance Mountain Bike Race: 18 Hours on the Farm …Who knew? Sounds more masochistic than a marathon.
- #3 Best 10K: Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K Challenge…OK, I think we were robbed here because we have the best 10K in the country, man. But they have to be politically correct and spread the wealth.

- #4 Best 8k: NTELOS 8KÂ Riding the tails of the SE’s #1 marathon
- #9 Best trail running race: James River Scramble 10K..Raced on the #1 Best urban trail system, aforementioned.

Temporary Offices in Richmond
Nice article in the TD (Couple target executive suite market) recently profiled a couple starting a temporary office space business in Henrico: Executive Business Center (3741-C Westerre Parkway). Never knew there was a market for this kind of service, but it makes sense. Upon further research, I found a couple other players in this field, and created a new section off main site entitled Richmond VA Temporary Offices. On a side note, I commend the TD Metro Business for profiling another minority owned business (last week, they profiled Grapes and Barley in the article Wine, beer shop improves with age).Â
