The Dirtwoman Factor

So I was all set in writing a clever post comparing the current Richmond Mayoral race to the Wire Season 4…You know, Doug Wilder as Royce Clayton, Dwight Jones as Councilman Gray, the Preachers as the Preachers, and….Paul Goldman as Carcetti…nahh, the metaphor starts to get pretty weak there (one could argue Tim Kaine was Carcetti).  What about Dirtwoman as Carcetti?**  :)

Actually, laugh all you want, but I think the Dirtwoman might play a major role in the 2008 election.  Sometimes politics is stranger than fiction.  When you watched the movie Predator, did you ever think in a million years there were TWO future governors on screen??  I think of Dirtwoman as more a “Ralph Nader” character in this political drama. S/he will get a tremendous amount of free publicity more than all of the candidates combined (the Elliot in the Morning exposure alone).  For example, compare the amount of blog chatter (I’m doing it right now) between DW and Lawrence Williams…Who’s Lawrence Williams?  Exactly.

Right now, the Richmond electorate is really pissed off at City Hall.  You can see it in the blogs, letters to the editor, talk radio, etc…Dirtwoman, the candidate, might crystallize into the ultimate “protest vote.”  Not enough, mind you, to win, but enough to edge out one candidate over another. Donnie Corker will be a kingmaker come November.

**Going back to the Wire…Who would be Richmond’s Nerese? “Downtown” Clay Davis? Norman?
***RVAMagazine’s graphic design of “Dirtwoman for Mayor” is brilliant.  It’s a legitimate piece of modern art, if you ask me. They need to sell limited edition lithographs of that…

Glutton Opines: Haru Sushi

It was nice to see Haru Sushi (in the Three Chopt Village Shopping Center “Cave”, one of my top 50s) get some recognition in this month’s Richmond Magazine cover story, “50 Fabulous Food Finds.”  Their Volcano Roll actually received the #1 honor…Haru is never super crowded (location?), and I always feel kind of bad for them.  They remind me of the underappreciated restaurant in the Big Night in the shadow of that over-the-top one (in this case, Osaka in the River Road Shopping Center).  Hope they get some bidness from the article.

Richmond Magazine did a really good job with this article in general, going deep into local menus finding surprises and excellence (so much better than that extremely disappointing Source Book article back in February).  A couple of intriguing items that are now on top of my eating agenda:

  • Louisiana Flair’s homemade hot sauce
  • Honey Whyte’s Black and Bleu burger
  • Lulu’s Peanut Butter Pie–Could it be better than Grandpa Eddie’s?

Glutton Opines: Broad Appetit Update

They’ve updated the schedule on the website, and man, are you going to be happy.  Newly added to Richmond’s Chef Battle Royale:

When you look at the complete lineup of local chefs competing, it’s mindblowing.  The simple fact that Richmond legends Jay Frank (representin Positive Vibe) and John Maxwell are back alone makes Broad Appetiti Richmond’s top food event of the year.  I’m definitely droppin a Benjamin that day.

Observing Richmond Media and Blogs…

As I’ve been “digging and drudging” local news for the re-vamped Good Life the last couple weeks, here are some interesting trends I’ve been noticing…

  • Blogging must be an aphrodisiac…Congratulations to all the new (and expecting) moms and dads in the Richmond blogging community!
  • Welcome back Urban Richmond!  With so many bloggers going on paternity and maternity leave, we needed you back.
  • One can only wonder how River City Rapids would have handled all the craziness going on in City Hall.  Wilder was very clever in hiring him…I think it’s his voice coming out in the recent Mayor newsletters.
  • Sure wish The Free Press was broken up by article and RSSed (as opposed to mega PDF of entire issue).  Same thing for RVAMagazine.
  • Speaking of RVAMagazine, they continue to innovate and be on the cutting edge.  How about Style giving them props for coming up with the whole local music compilation CD idea?  RVAMagazine is already on their second one.
  • Inrich.com is improving almost daily (rewind: Tobacco Avenue’s: Magellan expresses frustration over navigating inRich.com).  Multiple daily updates, and they are doing a much better job of integrating their various properties (ie, Mashup, Virginia Business, regional county papers, etc) under one unified roof. Aesthetics are getting cleaner…Harbinger Capital definitely put a spark up Franklin Street’s ass.
    • Brick is maintaining its independence by not taking part in the inrich umbrella, but they are getting better, too.  Recently, redesigned with RSS.  They’re also updating almost daily (as opposed to one mega-weekly dump a la Style)
  • Tobacco Avenue continues to blow my mind.  How they continue to stay creative and funny without burning out just amazes me.
  • i wish i could cook is a promising new food blog.
  • If this were the NFL draft, Richmond.com would be falling down the boards, Style would be neutral, and RVANews would be rising.  Getting Bopst podcast was a stroke of brilliance.
  • Church Hill People’s News continues to be the flagship and role model of the neighborhood blogs.
  • Of the three tv stations, I think NBC12 does the best job, especially weather (best one in town).  I betcha that’s one of the most trafficked sites in Richmond.
  • RVABlogs continues to rock…but do something about them double posts…annoying…
  • More and more Richmonders are using Cragislist.  I’ve bought so much crap off that.
  • Richmond Magazine could be an online monster if they ever opened their content vaults.  I sort of understand their business decision of not releasing their current issue online, but why not open up the archives, a treasure trove of Richmond news and insights?
  • Bottom line: I think the media and blogs are actually making each other better.  That’s my opinion.

I Want My Bopst Show

I’ve always been a fan of the Bopst Show and its philosophy of good music regardless of genre (basically, what Liberty 98 should strive to be…to borrow Bopst’s words, Liberty is in reality just a greatest hits of “corporate playlists” over the years).  If you really want “we play anything”, you’ve got to listen to his show, music anarchy personified.  1450 with its weak signal and lowfi AM sound (though it was weird to hear Slayer’s War Ensemble on AM) never did his mixes justice, but he soldiered on for that company…then just like that, he gets screwed (chronicle 1 | chronicle 2).  You know what?  Sometimes bad experiences can turn out to be blessings…

This week, in partnership with RVANews, he launched his first podcast in all its high fidelity mp3 glory.  The opening Peanuts theme gave me a big smile as the show launched into its furious, frenetic mashup.  Everything from the Bad Brains and Minutemen to old school dance hall reggae to my new favorite song, “Infected Girls.”  There was even some Nina Simone at the end (a subtle middle finger to WCLM?)…Bollywood pop…Barry White outtakes…Motorhead…Charles Mingus…Strauss…In the podcast format, it isn’t so much a fleeting radio show but rather an intelligent mix tape or some brilliant movie soundtrack.  I’ve actually been listening to it all week like a new CD.

Sirius-XM, give this guy a show, please.  Special thanks to RVANews for taking the bandwidth hit on this!  Keep the shows coming…

Richmond Live Music Calendar and the Jehovah’s Witnesses are Coming!

For the spring-summer concert season, I went ahead and created a Richmond live music calendar on the new-improved Good Life.  Does Richmond really need another music calendar website (see all the local choices already available on the red toolbar)?  Not really, but again, I build sites that I want to see and use…What I simply wanted was a website that listed the schedules of the National, Toad’s Place, and the big outdoor/indoor shows (The Coliseum, Friday Cheers, Innsbrook, Landmark, etc) side by side all on one page.  Further, wanting to learn more about the bands, I added links to their Wikipedia listings (which then will link you to the official websites and myspaces).

For smaller or local shows (no way in hell I’m keeping up with all that!), there are links to what I consider the better live music clubs as well as to all of the aforementioned existing calendars.  One stop shopping as they say.

Interesting side note: While researching upcoming Richmond Coliseum events (grrrr, not one freakin music show on the calendar!), I noticed that the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses Convention booked the coliseum for an ENTIRE MONTH (all of July).  My God (or Jehovah if you prefer), why would you need 30 days in a 10,000 person arena for a church event?  Do the Witnesses have some inside information?  Of all the cities in all the world, I suppose Richmond would be as good as any place for the Lord to begin His apocalypse.

For some reason, Witness Armageddon literature has always scared me.  The portrayal of a multi-cultural paradise where we live side by side with lions and elephants just doesn’t appeal to me (who’s going to clean up all the shit).   I’d almost prefer a Hieronymus Boschian hell. At least, there, I’d be with friends.

Hell Hath No Fury Like a Baseball Fan Scorned

Yeah, the Richmond Braves are still dead to me.  Judging by early attendance (or lack thereof), my fellow “real” fans are following suit.  We’re staying home and watching Directv MLB Extra Innings or road tripping to the new DC stadium or Camden or even Harbor Park.  Anything but the Gwinnett Braves (ABGB).  If you offered me a luxury box suite with free beers on the Fourth of July, I would refuse on principle.

Last week, I was listening to ESPN950 and chuckled as the personalities self-servingly lamented at this year’s small attendance.  C’mon, what do you expect:

This situation sucks, but tell you what, I’m still supporting Virginia (not Georgia) baseball.  In fact, mark this on your calendar.  This Tuesday (April 15, 7 PM), the VCU baseball team is playing the University of Richmond at the Diamond.  Just $5 or free with VCU ID.

Wouldn’t it be a cool statement (ie, giving the G-Braves the bird) if we had more fans in attendance on Tuesday than they got on opening day (1,287 attendees)?  If anyone else feels the same way, spread the word.

The Real Dissing of the Local Blogging Scene

Two of the more prominent local bloggers took the city paper to task for continuing to ignore the Richmond blog community (see je ne sais pas: I wish that there were a local newspaper | River City Rapids: Dissing the Local Blogging Scene Yet Again).  The flashpoint article was a wire story the TD Metro Business ran around food blogs (Bloggers find food criticism tasty).  As River City points out “Maybe it is easier to pull a story off the AP wire and pay for it than have a reporter go out and ask a few questions of the locals. Maybe the “community” outlet is not so community after all.”

As an occasional local food blogger, I did not personally take this article as a “dis.”  This particular story was more about national bloggers addressing global food industry topics (ie, candy or frozen foods).   Our community food blogs take more of a local slant on eating as opposed to full-blown industrial coverage (a completely different beast).

…And they do a hell of a good job as part of the #1 blogging community in the country.  The BIGGER “conspiracy” question I have is why hasn’t the mainstream press covered the Project for Excellence in Journalism study?  When is Richmond ever #1 for anything?  The PEJ is as legitimate and national as it gets (Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and The Pew Research Center!?!).  Something like this story should have warranted at the very least a mention (if not a full blown “above the fold” story).  As far as I can tell, zero local coverage.  What gives?  Is it because the study failed to mention Barticles?

James River Film Festival Final Day

Today is the last day of the James River Film Festival.  In this day and age where many national film festivals have sold their soul to the corporate devil (studios), JRFF is a breath of fresh air.  It is one of the most “independent” festivals out there eschewing studio crap for artistic quality and local support.  They program cutting edge films and shorts, stuff you’ll never see at the local Short Pump theatre.  Take today’s schedule, for example:

  •  10:00 a.m. MOMMA’S MAN (2007, 95 min.) with Azazel, Ken and Flo Jacobs The Byrd Theatre Admission $5
At Sundance, Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman singled out the film as a work that does “nothing less than re-invent, and purify, that Sundance staple – the quirky, angst ridden family drama.”   What makes Azazel’s unique is that he cast his parents – painter Flo and legendary avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs – as “Mom” and “Dad” and shot it in their TriBeCa loft. Come see here first, before its theatrical release this summer, with the film’s director and his/ its parents.
  • 12:00 noon SOUTHLAND TALES (2006, 145 min.) with Richard Kelly Q&A, The Byrd Theatre, Admission $5
(Midlothian’s own) Richard Kelly’s follow-up to Donnie Darko is an apocalyptic sci-fi war story that challenges an audience’s narrative expectations. A Richmond premiere!  With the Richard Kelly Q&A, now is your chance to ask that question about Donnie Darko that’s been bugging you for years.
  • 3:00 p.m., BEST OF WHOLPHIN with Emily Doe (Approx. 90 min.) Admission $5, The Firehouse Theatre
Assistant editor Emily Doe will screen a selection of films from Wholphin, a quarterly DVD magazine from McSweeney’s that features short films, documentaries, animation, and instructional videos that have not, for whatever reason, found wide release. Come see the world’s most illegal game of border volleyball; a band of Scottish nine-year-olds singing “Satan Rocks” at their county fair; a Wizard of Oz story reinterpreted in a world of evangelical mysticism; a documentary about a thirteen-year-old Yemeni girl who refuses to wear her veil; an Academy Award nominated short; squid birth and more!
  • 5:00 p.m., BAD GIRLS (2000-2005, 85 min.) with David Williams, The Firehouse Theatre, Admission $5
Another in a series of works into artists’ personalities and processes, Richmond filmmaker David Williams offers a work-in-progress on the local art duo known as “Bad Girl Art.” Keithley Pierce and Georgia Terry make art with an unflinching honesty and a humorous tongue-in-cheek quality derived from their own relationships with men and family. After cultivating a loyal patronage, they’re finally able to quit their day jobs and pursue their one true calling. Stay for a Q&A after the film with Mr. Williams.
  • 7:30 p.m., WHY HAS BODHI-DHARMA LEFT FOR THE EAST? (1989, 135 min., Korean with subtitles), The Firehouse Theatre, Admission $5
The first major Korean film to be released in the U.S., director Bae Yong-kyun’s Zen saga relates the last days of an elderly Buddhist monk, and his two charges, a disciple and an orphan. As he prepares for his death, he wisely prepares them for their own life paths. Stunning cinematography in a restored print from Milestone Films. In Korean with subtitles.

The James River Film Festival is 100% volunteer driven and supported strictly on ticket sales.  On this gray day, why not go see a movie?

Welcome to Richmond Good Life Version 1.1

Friends like to make fun of my website…it looks awful, “so 1996″…doesn’t use images…no cascading style sheets…zero flash (both literally and figuratively)…no thematic unity (”what’s with all the redneck topics”)…too busy…

It’s cool.  It’s by design (if you want mysql/python/rails/rss/css…that’s gonna be my next project)…I think there is beauty in the simplicity of a Craigslist or even Drudge Report.  Aesthetics is irrelevant.  At the end of the day, it’s the content, always the content that brings you back.  As for the fluff, Skip Intro, always…  I think I’ve done a decent job in building some good reference materials, especially the dining section.  The site aims to be ridiculously inclusive and comprehensive while removing noise/junk and leaving some space for personal recommendations.  I think that’s why it’s built a growing readership and following (at least based on traffic stats and rss reader subscriptions).

The site still needed a makeover though.  For some reason, I’ve always remembered a quote Alec Baldwin (of all people) once made.  He said that his dream job would be being the Matt Drudge of St Barths.  At the time, I immediately thought that he could have that overpriced island…I’ll take being the Drudge of St Maarten/Martin any day.  Since that particular fantasy won’t happen anytime soon, I have resigned myself to my beloved Richmond.

Drawing much inspiration from the Drudge Report, Digg, and Google News, I redesigned the home page of the Good Life.  I am now triaging interesting Richmond news stories drawn from everywhere (the paper, blogs, tv stations, myspace, discussion boards, whatever is interesting).  It’ll be up to my editorial discretion to determine what might be of interest to you (I get to play-pretend being a managing editor).  Sure, there are links to silly tabloid/celebrity stories, but it’ll be balanced out with some serious stuff.  I’ll also have my share of stories that will be of zero interest to most of you.  Expect a compilation of fishing reports every Thursday until June-ish.

Check out the site.  Tell me what you think. I’m going to experiment with this new idea for a couple of months to see where it goes.  Perhaps, “Glutton Opines: Grand Case restaurants” will be part of Version 1.2.

It makes me smile that I have chosen the following inaugural (first!) images for the new site: Marlboro, Lee’s Fried Chicken, Donnie Darko, 4 Chan, and some hot reality tv model.
